AstraZeneca (London, England) named David R. Brennan as chief executive of North American operations. Brennan is an executive director of AstraZeneca PLC and executive vice-president of AstraZeneca North America. He is replacing retiring chief Tom McKillop.

Merck (Whitehouse Station, NJ) has shifted the responsibilities of several Management Committee members. Effective Sept. 1, Adel A.F. Mahmoud, president of Merck Vaccines, will assume the new position of chief medical advisor of vaccines and infectious diseases. Mahmoud, who is scheduled for mandatory retirement from Merck in September 2006, will continue to report to Richard T. Clark, CEO and president of Merck. Margaret G. McGlynn will become president of Merck Vaccines, effective Sept. 1. McGlynn will have global responsibilities for Merck's vaccines business, including the oversight of the company's joint venture with Sanofi-Aventis. For a full list of Merck's staff changes.
